The USGS sent an alert that Nevada had been rocked by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake early Thursday before quickly deleting the warning from its web page and saying it had been an error.

The National Weather Service announced that a deadly North Dakota tornado this summer has been assessed as a 5 on the enhanced Fujita scale, with wind speeds greater than 210 miles per hour. It’s the first time since 2013 that a tornado has been given the highest possible rating.
