Hailstones in my backyard-right here in Interior Alaska. @alaskawx.bsky.social could this be the ‘new normal’ driven by rapid Arctic warming?

Getting ready for a field campaign in Alaska to study new particle formation in the North American boreal forest.
We’re calling it DENALI -Dynamics of Emissions, Nucleation, and Aerosols to predict Land-atmosphere-climate Interactions - a brilliant name suggested by a great colleague from Canada!

It is amazing how much new research this mysterious "discrepancy" has led to!
OH NO! NOx this again…
💨Measurement interferences may explain some discrepancies between hydroxyl radical measurement and modelling results, as opposed to an unknown chemical mechanism.

This is really sad news. NOAA GFDL is one of the world's leading climate modeling centers, home to exceptional scientists. If anyone directly affected needs support, I’m happy to help. www.science.org/content/arti...

Disappointing and needs to be reversed. The benefits of air monitoring far outweigh the costs.

Since 2008, embassies and other diplomatic posts had been publishing data about local air quality. In many countries, it was the only reliable source of such information.

Friendly reminder: if you are waiting on something from a US-based scientist/reviewer/editor, please realize that we're barely making it through each day putting out non-stop fires and trying not to collapse into tears. We're trying our best, but things will take longer right now. Give grace.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats.

After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

I don't know if the ASCENT network has a presence on BlueSky yet, but I got this from Twitter. They're making their data available from the US supersites in light of the LA fires.

It also highlights an interesting aspect of using a priori profiles in satellite retrievals: if the actual atmospheric profiles deviate too much from the a priori profiles, the retrieval process may fail. This could apply to many retrievals for atmospheric compoistion.
