holy shit, this description of @jimkourlas.bsky.social's "High Slopes" is so good
Oh, man. I read High Slopes by Jim Kourlas with a mixture of prurience, anxiety, and resentment, unsure of both what exactly I was getting and what I hoped to get. I still don't know. This story is so weird, funny, sadistic, and relentless that despite (or maybe because of) my constant desire to argue with it, I found myself continually won over by its depiction of masculinity. The cruelty, the humiliation, the homoeroticism, the competition, the arbitrary violence, and of course the many, many dicks: This is what it's like to be a man. Especially if--like the narrator, and, I suspect, the author--one remembers being a shy little boy and learning about manhood first of all by learning to be physically afraid. I loved this story. I hated this story. Fuck this story. It's exactly right.

Dreamt I invented a recipe for depressed people reluctant to eat: raw eggs and maybe ham squished together by hand into a slice of cheap white bread. I called it the hairball. The gal in the commercial was eating it in bed. She was wearing a turtleneck.

The men are seated in Conference Room 3B, where we dim the lights and project onto a massive screen clips from the 1984 martial arts drama The Karate Kid. The wax-on, wax-off scenes of The Karate Kid bathe the men in nostalgia—a far cry from memory, but a start. It also suggests a non-traditional curriculum is afoot and allows them to project themselves as heroes in the drama we are about to unfold. Some identify with Daniel LaRusso while others Johnny Lawrence. It doesn’t matter which, for all of the men are competitors eager to consume their colleagues, even the shy man. One might even say especially the shy man. By the end of the weekend there will be several instances of cannibalism. There always is.
