Long overdue post: huge thanks to mural arts for this award and especially to Suave Gonzalez who made this extraordinary evening possible. I so honored--especially to be included among such rockstar awardees: Celeste Trusty and Eddie Ramirez.

October 2nd is Wrongful Conviction Day. Women are less than 10% of exonerees. Why? Women face additional hurdles to overturn a wrongful conviction. These include: lack of financial & legal resources, women's cases less likely to involve DNA, women's prisons located further from population centers...

A gentle reminder from Judge Sol Wachtler on the lopsidedness of grand juries: prosecutors could get an indictment against a ham sandwich. Why? It's not an adversarial hearing. They don't hear from the defendant/defense. They issue indictment in 95-99% of al cases.

Sept is brain aneurysm awareness month. Earlier this year, my friend Dee lost her life to an undetected brain aneurysm. Screening and early detection may have saved her. Friends & fam gathered last week to honor her & raise awareness at annual @brainaneurysm 5k.

If you're able, please send some encouraging words to Kim Joynes. She's an incarcerated survivor of sexual abuse and gender violence that began in childhood. Yesterday she was turned down for commutation of her LWOP sentence by PA Board of Pardons. She's served over 45 years in prison.

I've been in this business for a long time. Today's decision is inexplicable.
We are heartbroken by the Board of Pardons decision to reject Kim Joynes application for commutation. Kim has been incarcerated for 45+ years & has the support of the PA DOC, as well as a robust network of friends & family ready to support her reentry.

PA Board of Pardons public hearings on commutation begins at noon (approx). Kim Joynes's application will be heard later in the afternoon. You can watch live here: pacast.com/live/bophear...

In Harrisburg today as Kim Joynes' advocate for commutation. She, along with several other applicants, will be interviewed by members of PA Board of Pardons. It's the most important interview of her life--one that will determine how she will live out her remaining years.

Had a great conversation w Kim Joynes as she preps for her interview with the Board of Parole. From my vantage, commutation is designed precisely for highly deserving folks like Kim. Hearing is scheduled for Friday and you can watch live (I will be testifying). Will share link before hearing starts.

Just over a week before the PA Board of Pardons will consider Kim Joynes petition for commutation. She has served 4+ decades of LWOP for a murder committed by a man who was released in the 1990s. I'll be speaking on her behalf. You can tune in live next Friday to listen & support.

1:18 pm another alert at Villanova. This one for "police activity" in a parking garage and listed as "no immediate threat." If you're keeping count, this is 3 alerts in less than a week.

It's the first day of the Fall semester at Villanova & we've now had 2 separate alerts of an active shooter on campus. The 1st resulted in campus-wide lockdown on Thur. The 2nd was yesterday (Sunday) & resulted in an extensive search of a dorm. Both determined to be result of hoax.

Yesterday my phone blew up with texts. I ignored them bc I was writing. When I finally checked 1st message was in a group chat of 4 colleagues: 2 were on campus amidst an active shooter lockdown. 1 was trapped in her car in the parking garage. The other locked & barricaded inside a bldg.
