i feel like no one ever talks about the PSP version of Final Fantasy 1 these days but i think the spritework in it is good and it makes slight tweaks to the battle system in a way that made me much less likely to bounce off of it so i'll take that compromise over the authentic crust of the original

something has clicked in my brain and i'm able to actually finish RPGs with some amount of consistency now. in the past two months i've finished Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest 2, Chrono Trigger, and now Final Fantasy 1. there's a huge backlog of games i've never made it through that feels open to me now

this timer is off by about 25 years if you count the first time i started it in an emulator like "everyone keeps talking about this game" before immediately bouncing off the slow intro, something which repeated itself through decades of attempts. i wish i'd stuck it out sooner but i finally did it

i picked my Chrono Trigger run back up after being busy with work and distracted with other games in my downtime for a few weeks and i'm in the runup to the endgame now. it's so funny that i keep having moments of "wow, this classic is a classic! who'd've thought?"

all the techniques i applied in both games are from the traditional school of having computers play chess as i learned it in college a somewhat frightening number of years ago, but That Term has been horribly overloaded and people will assume you’re on some bullshit if they hear Those Letters
We just pushed an update to the backer beta of Petal 2 with computer opponents and I'm thinking about how we literally stopped referring to them as "the AI" for this reason. It's now the "vs. CPU"

bsky.app/profile/bran...
Since the term AI has been poisoned by generative world-burning stuff, we're going to have to go back to calling video game AI routines "the computer." I couldn't beat the final boss because the computer was being cheap, etc.

Keep thinking about this term "pre-digested" that Kojima used to describe art that's instantly gratifying. And how it's better when people grow to love something instead.

I've gravitated, as player and designer, toward the latter, but that term "pre-digested" is new and feels very strong.

FFXIV 7.3 was the first .X update that i didn't play through the MSQ of within a day of it coming out and apparently breaking the habit meant i just never got around to it, and now 7.4 is out and the only times i've logged in almost this whole year have been to not miss seasonal events. damn.

i came up with a theory

2015: Undertale rewrites our brains
2025: Unbeatable rewrites our brains
2035: Unpe[???]le rewrites our brains

symmetry would imply one last flip but sadly, English has no words starting with "Unqe". however, future developments in linguistic technology may change this
December 13, 2025 at 5:36 PM
i can't say if Unbeatable's influence will be felt in anything i work on "soon", but the big ambitious project that's been rattling around my brain for years feels like its trajectory was absolutely altered by passing through this orbit just now
December 12, 2025 at 5:29 PM
at the very least i know i can say Unbeatable's approach to set design and shot composition are tickling my brain endlessly. the moody late summer-feeling lighting, the locations that look half like jet set radio maps and half like a collection of miniature appliances pulled from gachapon machines,
