This makes me think of that 1990 interview Trump did with Playboy where he admitted that when it came to Tiananmen Square, he was rooting for the tanks.

But the group identity formation that is structuring the ICE units reinforces this: A group of strangers parachuted into unfamiliar environments, sent out on violent adrenaline-rush missions and confronted by hostile popular resistance.

All of this creates a hardened us-them boundary.

The targeted recruitment of right-wing militarists with no vetting or training creates a paramilitary force unequipped to respond to popular resistance with anything but the use of uncontrolled violence.

It is visibly obvious from all the videos we've seen so far that they are out of their depth.

There's also been a shift in character in activism.

In Trump's first term, the big actions were symbolic protests designed to make a narrative impact.

In Trump's second term, we are seeing actions designed to practically frustrate an authoritarian crackdown on civil liberties.
One of the big trends in opposition activism during Trump 2.0 has been the localism of protest. This level of organizing is pretty astonishing to watch, and anyone who insists that there haven't been any protests against Trump is simply ignoring it www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

This is the first citywide general strike in the US since the 1940s. There is a tradition of general strikes with examples going back nearly 200 years (I'm most familiar with Seattle in 1919). www.nytimes.com/2026/01/23/u...

Respectfully, I am going to whisper to some of our white comrades a truth that should be more widely known: You definitely have some ancestors to be proud of, ancestors who refused white supremacy, and poured out their lives in many of these struggles over time.

Time to claim your true history.

My take on the Jan 23 action in Minneapolis is that I don’t really care whether it’s a “true” general strike (we could argue about that all day).

What DOES matter is that it’s a bold and necessary escalation, and local labor leaders are publicly encouraging workers to join in anti-ICE resistance
