The world is on fire and everything is bad, so here is a disconnected series of screenshots from my time spent delving into the Nintendo Entertainment System classics over the break, which I enjoy entirely out of context. NES games are great, thoroughly recommend the deep dive!

Disclaimer: I wrote this before we did, in fact, get more info about Fable.

HAPPY PITT DAY TO THOSE WHO CELEBRATE
January 9, 2026 at 10:36 AM
Got one last bit of free time this afternoon before going back to work tomorrow, so another dive into the Nintendo Switch Online NES catalogue meant that Nightshade (1992) became my first finished game of 2026! Another new (to me) game to learn about - but this time Australian, even more exciting!

Trying again with the old Letterboxd account that I apparently made at the beginning of last year and then didn't touch again. Let's see if this is the year I actually watch more films (I am jesszam on there, join me if you are so inclined!) boxd.it/cvgZF

Seeing my name in some TV credits for the first time is another pretty cool way to start the new year! (and on the ABC, which feels special) Super proud of this weird lil deeply Australian show we've made

Starting the new year with Stranger Things and building this extremely exciting LEGO set, feels right

2025 was a weird year. Lots of big forced changes, self reflection, and attempts to establish a new normal. Huge steps forward and a whole bunch of little stumbles back. I learned a lot about myself. I felt some things I hadn't felt in years, and decided that in itself is progress. I'm opening up.

Also while we're at it in other life updates I finished Pluribus and am now going to be thinking about it constantly for the foreseeable future (at least until the return of 2025's other perfect TV show, The Pitt)

Spent time over the last couple of days idly messing around with the NES games in the Nintendo Switch Online games catalogue. This afternoon I started and finished StarTropics, a game I will admit to previously being entirely unfamiliar with, in about 4 and half hours. Fun times!

We have been threatening to start a podcast for such a long time, and it's finally happening. Come and listen to us chat about The Christmas Writer, which managed to very quickly show that we all apparently want very different things from Christmas movies - so it got us off to a great start!

Horrific day. Terrifying, abhorrent shit to happen anywhere, but especially way too close to home. I hope you're all safe, fellow Sydney friends. Here if anyone needs to chat or spend some time staring into the middle distance together to process.

I've made a terrible mistake. I fear I'm going to have to become a Magic person, now.

Maybe I'm gonna become a JRPG person for this game?

Went to visit my parents yesterday and located this prized possession, I am curious (yet afraid of) whether or not it still works (I'm sure the Neopets will still be alive but in what state, at what cost)

Confirmed, it does in fact rule when David makes food for his friends! (thank you David)
Big help: having a housemate like @jesszam.bsky.social who is delighted by any food you make for her. Make food for your friends! It rules

Today I learned that the key to bypassing the anxiety that usually stops me from reaching out to new people at work is them joining a meeting I'm in with a cat on their lap, at which point I will apparently reflexively message "that is an extremely good cat" with no context and feel fine about it

It's taking so much self-control, but I'm trying to do this properly and play it the "right" way. This game is so extremely my shit, though. We (episodic choice-based narrative adventures) are so back.
