Messaging systems + sharp copy for founders and lean marketing teams. Building tools and media for remote-first operators doing it differently. Public speaker.

New here, so here’s a quick intro. 👋

I’m Jessica, and I help founders and lean marketing teams build marketing moats. Think evergreen assets that keep driving results for months or years.

I’m big on clear messaging, smart storytelling, and making the most of your marketing assets.
I told myself I’d never get a ring light.

Then I got two.

The lighting is great. The shame is manageable.

Also: video is less awful than I expected.

This is the slippery slope, isn’t it?

This bop has no right to go this hard.

I don’t speak Icelandic. I’ve never even been to Iceland.

And yet if they needed me to row a boat for the homeland, I would simply start paddling.

High praise!

This was fun -- more about writing and less about companies.

I haven’t stopped thinking about this clip since we recorded it.

Is AI quietly killing micro-SaaS?

Why pay $20/month for a tool that almost works when you can build your own custom one that fits perfectly?

I talked with @leenyburger.bsky.social about this shift and a lot more on the pod.

The irony of being forced to wait 30-60 mins in my running car to get an emissions test to renew car registration is not lost on me.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but you don’t need another AI prompt template or a $49 prompting course.

You just need to start using AI more and then ask it how to refine your prompts.

It’ll tell you. If you’re paying attention and putting in the reps.

I wonder who looked at regular drowning and said, but what if it was darker, tighter, and spicier? And that’s how cave diving exists.

The biggest marketing mistake? Waiting.

A year ago, some were tweaking their positioning. A year later? Same spot.

The best founders test, publish & refine. Stacking bricks while everyone else is still sketching blueprints.

Just a random observation: Arguing about politics in a LinkedIn comment section feels like the definition of high risk, low reward, and a nonzero chance of an awkward 8 am chat with HR.

Dear founder, when’s the last time you did a real customer interview?

You know you should be doing them. But when you try, it feels like a waste of time.

So, I talked with @mjwhansen.com on my podcast and dug into the real mechanics of great customer interviews.

New episode drops Thursday.

This podcast episode is absolutely unhinged.

You’re too close to your product / website / writing to see the “obvious” flaws.

At minimum, watch customers attempt to understand and use it.

At maximum, hire editors whom you trust.

This is what happens when you sacrifice clarity and just hop on the "We're like X but for <<insert category>>.

When it comes to your copy, remember clarity over cleverness.

Bonus points: If you can tell me what this app even does?
oh cool I’ve been meaning to learn anxiety

Just going to say as an introvert, Waymo is a dream. Get to my destination without any small talk. It is also a pretty cool experience.

Editing by committee? A recipe for mediocre marketing. When 4+ people weigh in, the messaging gets lost.

Keep it tight. Keep it clear.
February 21, 2025 at 6:09 PM
All of this.

My go-to copywriting default is clarity beats cleverness.

And yes, I sometimes get some initial pushback but the results speak for themselves when I stick to this.
Plain language beats corporate marketing language. Again.

It’s funny that even after realizing this, the author still thinks dumb jargon is good “for Fortune 500.”

No. It’s never good.

Only introspective people have impostor syndrome.

Only over-confident ignorant people think would be confident without cause.

So, if you’re experiencing it, realize that’s because you’re smart.

Which makes you more worthy, not less.

Just your regular reminder: Great ideas spread. Perfect writing doesn’t.

Your audience doesn’t care if your content is perfectly written. They care if it’s clear. If it’s interesting. If it makes them think.

Unless your audience is high school English teachers, then good luck to you.

I've been reviewing applications for a freelance content coordinator role on my team. I asked candidates to share a recent project they’re proud of. A surprising number cited work from before the pandemic.

Is it just me, or is that a bit of a red flag?
