NEW: After my last piece about what's slowing down game development, folks wrote in to ask "why didn't you talk about bad leadership?"

It uhhhh never came up. So I returned to the well and asked devs to explain why better leadership—not AI or any other tool—is vital to efficient game development.

This is a thoughtful and nuanced article about the challenge of refusing work that doesn’t align with your values and how the mantra “no ethical consumption under capitalism” can abet abdicating responsibility. Some of my bright lines: no work involving gen AI, crypto, gambling, or dark patterns.

This is a good lesson I've tried to put into practice: to create and sustain more connections, just keep coming back. Be the person that keeps extending invitations (and extending grace), without expectations of reciprocity. Make space for things to happen.

So, bit of bad news (minor in the scope of things, don't panic!)—the public NYC Game Dev Google calendar of local events is gone. My guess is an (unknown) contributor who just didn't use it anymore accidentally deleted it for everyone.
