The way I look at American political structure: the system is built for two parties. If you aren't in one of the parties, you're essentially irrelevant. So the only practical move is to make one of them work more like you want it to.

The Tea Party et al did this and then some with the Republicans.

Calling an assurance that someone who isn't involved in the negotiations will follow the law isn't anything to be proud of. It codifies that whether or not the law needs to be followed is up for negotiation. This is terrifying precedent of the Dems' making.

Given the increasing likelihood of Thanksgiving travel chaos, I wonder if anyone's setting up an exchange for people to trade/resell non-refundable hotel reservations so people can switch to driving-distance excursions.

The costumes in Portland are great. Now we just need loudspeakers blasting Yakety Sax whenever the feds come and go.

We need a word for "not surprising but still maddening." It will help us acknowledge the onslaught of evil without becoming numb to it. Any ideas?

Car insurance renewal notice just came. Lemonade breaks out the price per car:

2013 Toyota Prius is going up ~20%, both for base rate and per-mile cost
2018 Chrysler Pacific base rate is going up ~10% but the per-mile cost is going down a tenth of a penny

This is due to tariffs, right?

One relatively minor consequence of the Iran-Israel conflict is the wide berths flights have to take to avoid missles. This flight from Qatar to Georgia traveled more than double the normal distance, turning a sub-3-hour flight into a 5.5-hour one. www.flightaware.com/live/flight/...

Trump declares war on cities

I find it very helpful to think of the US as having space for two parties. Who occupies each space is what it's all about. Look at how the GOP has been transformed in the past 15 or so years. It's the Dems' turn next. Before it's too late.
In light of Mamdani's performance, is astonishing there aren't more insurgent primary campaigns. Democratic establishment is discredited. Power is just sitting there like a mountain of gold but instead of being guarded by a fire-breathing dragon, it's fossils like Chuck Schumer
