The blue dot of GPS has cut us off from a basic human skill. It’s no wonder mountain rescuers are being called out so often, asks Guardian columnist John Harris

I mean, HELLO? So Oxbridge has several dozen applicants for every position. Well, guess what, SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE, BECAUSE THERE’S HARDLY ANY JOBS GOING.
'According to Cambridge’s equality and diversity report, a total of 4,874 people applied for 137 academic positions in 2023-24 – almost 36 applicants for every position, equivalent to a success rate of 2.8 per cent.' 1/3

What do you call humans being kidnapped and sent to another country to be imprisoned in shackles and forced to perform intense physical labor while living in horrid conditions under the threat of daily physical violence and rape?

Open a history book. You can do it. I believe in you.

Instead of slashing welfare and disability benefits — forcing more disabled people and children into poverty — the government could introduce a 2% tax on assets over £10 million.

It would raise £24 billion — five times the savings from these cuts.

This is austerity 2.0

Lord Salisbury used to warn against politicians using maps: 'A great deal of misunderstanding is caused by speakers having made use of maps drawn up on a small scale'.
Trump: "To be honest with you, Canada only works as a state. We don't need anything they have. As a state it would be one of the great states. This would be the most incredible country visually. If you look at a map, they drew an artificial line right through it."

Trump (idiotically) objects to maps w "artificial lines drawn through them."

Bad news for 49 US states plus DC. All except Hawaii (plus other islands) have straight-lines as some part of their border.

And spare a thought for Colorado and Wyoming!

Bonus: would you hire someone who said this?

I'm guessing that many research institutions outside the U.S. will recruit talented scientists currently based in the U.S.

Is anyone aware of organized recruitment efforts? The only one I've seen was this one from a French university.
