Roughly 98% of people crossing the channel seek asylum, and the vast majority get it. The main reason for them doing so is because they have existing ties to the UK, although these may not, on paper, be strong enough to count directly for family reunification. 2/

"Tougher border policies" have been shown for years to force more people into more dangerous irregular routes. With scrapping the Afghan Resettlement Scheme Labour has shown it's not serious about reducing channel crossings. If it was it would be implementing safer and simpler routes to seek asylum.
