Wrote a piece in with Hye Young You

goodauthority.org/news/south-k...

Our main points:

- massage from South Korean politicians and citizens was clear: no return to military rule.

- then, why democratic institutions that should have deterred President’s undemocratic move did not work?
How strong is South Korea's democracy?
The big lesson from the recent tests of democratic resilience in South Korea is that any democracy can be at risk.

I appeared in wbur radio show (also part of npr podcast) called “On Point” to discuss what happened in South Korea. The show describes the event, background, and the past quite well if you are curious about the bigger picture. @johnskuk.bsky.social was there too!

Ruling party has the key now. There will be impeachment voting at the National Assembly in 6 hours. Opposition needs 8 more votes to impeach President Yoon.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol spoke publicly for the first time since the martial law debacle. His statement was short and defiant. He said he won’t evade repercussions, signaled he won’t leave the party or resign (things party members asked him to do so he won’t be impeached).

A detail in this timeline caught my eye: "The DP had raised concerns over reports of informal meetings among Yoon’s high school alumni in military and ministerial positions." Brings to mind a great article by @jeanhong.bsky.social & Joon Nak Choi on social networks in the S.K. democratic transition:

South Korea's president briefly declared martial law.
President Yoon’s approval rating hit a record low, at just 19 percent, last week. So what's behind his declaration of martial law?
