Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

In a webinar today about the threats to expression in the U.S., I said the question was ultimately more about whether people would have the courage to fight for their rights than whether they would win those fights. You do not retain rights you willingly give up.

BREAKING: Free speech doesn’t stop when the sun sets—but Texas thinks it does. A new Texas law forces public universities to ban virtually all expressive activities after 10 PM, a violation of the First Amendment.

That’s why FIRE is suing to stop this chilling law in its tracks.

STATEMENT: President Trump may believe he has the power to revise the First Amendment with the stroke of a pen, but he doesn’t.

Flag burning as a form of political protest is protected by the First Amendment. That’s nothing new.

2/ In 2023, West Texas A&M President Walter Wendler unilaterally canceled a planned campus drag show intended to raise money for suicide prevention. Wendler claimed drag offends and demeans women, even though he admitted “the law of the land appears to require” him to allow the performance.

Texas v Johnson: “We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents.” This is one of the strongest notions of the First Amendment—the idea that symbols of freedom are worth more when allowed to be insulted, burned.
Trump: "People that burn the American flag should go to jail for one year ... we're working with some of your senators."

A quick correction of fact in here. The Tesla dealer is in West Bloomfield, but this strip mall is just across the border to the south in Farmington Hills. But there's no edit feature on Bluesky, so it's too late for me to relabel it The White Elephant Graveyard of Farmington Hills. Alas.

Must read:

"That we do not agree with everything our classmates might say is beside the point; they deserve the same First Amendment rights we do. Free expression, including unpopular speech, is a cornerstone not just of our universities, but of our democracy."
