Next fall's grad seminar will fall under "Narrative Theory" (we haven't taught it in forever; if we don't, we lose the number). Two wolves: an idiomatic triad of choice, control, and violence or a Back to the Roots of cultural expressionism: Leo Marx, Kracauer (Nietzsche!), Moten, etc. Thoughts?

The statue and the bomb, or, the Hall of Fame and the kinetic strike, or hosting a television show and carrying out a coup “literally like I was watching a television show”
It’s gonna be weird when this thing comes out in like 2029.

Here's a bit I wrote back in July about Trump, war, and Benjamin. It's supposed to be part of a forthcoming roundtable on Trumpian Aesthetics, but between the writing the publishing, all the predictions have come true or worse.

My haters: Hey, J.D., that unverifiable hobbyhorse of yours where media objects allegorize their social conditions of production, that's all gonna go away with GenAI, right?

Just get the calipers, George
This article advocates for the “Faculty Merit Act” that would — get this — require all faculty applicants to submit their *SAT* scores. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Holy shirts that’s hilarious.

My County Commissioner told me hikers keep dying on Mt. Baldy so I asked how many hikers and she said she just goes to the Forest Service office and gets a new hiker afterwards so I said it sounds like she’s just feeding hikers to the Devil's Backbone and then her daughter started crying.

Television is a visual medium. We should get a downmarket Fonzie impersonator and that guy who always looks like he doesn't understand what the vet means when he says it's time to think about putting the dog down.

This is great reporting. Behind it, the fuse that leads to this story is that the Supreme Court's pro-corruption rollback of what counts as bribery meant that the FBI had to wait to see if Homan fulfilled the quid pro quo before they could move.
Border czar Tom Homan didn't receive a normal background check for his role while his bribery probe was still ongoing:

Justice officials felt sure Homan would not be able to obtain a security clearance based on the evidence gathered. It remains unclear how Homan was eventually granted clearance.

President-elect Trump initially balked at submitting names of likely nominees to the FBI for background checks, a basic step intended to flag possible financial conflicts or ethical problems.

Not to steal @annakornbluh.bsky.social's thing but: tolerably accurate versions of academia on screen, a syllabus

Erin Brockovich

And?
perennial complaint, i know: but c'mon if you're gonna spend all that time and money to make a movie and it's about academia, like spend twenty minutes talking to somebody to see if your script makes any sense. this is about sorry, baby.
