I've been on the "oh no, gambling on your phone on sports if very very bad" train since the beginning, so I mostly just nod sadly at stories like this now. What a mess. I don't know how we fix this one either.
MLB pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz charged with taking bribes to rig pitches
Two Major League Baseball pitchers have been indicted on charges they took bribes to give bettors advance notice of the types of pitches they'd throw and intentionally tossed balls instead of strikes.

If any Kansans want to no unaffiliated, Kansas allows you to declare for a primary at the poll pad. You'll hand them your ID, they'll see you are independent, and ask you which primary you'd like to vote in. Very easy.

I don't buy that the Trump Admin has anything to do with this productivity surge (as the headline would suggest). Trend was that way anyway for 3/4 sectors. But I am fascinated that a productivity surge has survived. ht to @adamtooze.bsky.social for highlighting this. www.ft.com/content/b72e...

This time-to-liquidity function over the last decade may not seem like much, but if you apply an inflation adjusted impact to IRR calculation to this, the impact on most venture funds is pretty substantial. It's a hard business. Has been for awhile.

Sandwich verdict wasn’t jury nullification. It was failure to prove the required “reasonable fear of physical injury” in a case where the agent was wearing A BULLETPROOF VEST. The only crime was the waste of resources on this case. My thoughts in @MSNBCDaily.

Opinion | The sandwich thrower was wrong. But Jeanine Pirro was, too.
To establish a forcible assault, jurors were required to find that Dunn caused “reasonable apprehension of immediate bodily harm.” That allegation was laughable.

This, from the always-thoughtful @teamziller.bsky.social, is a very well-argued case for not doing that.

I wrote about why the Jazz shouldn't trade Lauri Markkanen. The context of the roster around him has changed (despite Kessler's injury) and there is a path to a good team with Lauri soon. www.teamziller.com/lauri-markka...

I think this is a fascinating window into how LLM tools might be used to improve clinical documentation while also reducing error (because errors are very bad in this use case). This "LLM-as-Judge" mental model for application of this stuff is interesting to me.

Pay commensurate with job responsibilities should not be all that controversial.
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.
We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

I don't much desire to enter The Discourse™️, but I don't think that sandwich guy verdict is jury nullification. It's really difficult to fulfill the components of an assault charge chucking a sub at an armed man in full battle gear. Or even a guy in a tank top for that matter. He just wasn't guilty.
