Snippet from my women’s fiction/litfic WIP: That Saturday, Micah drove to the Center of Science and Industry in downtown Columbus to meet Steve. As she parked, she caught a glimpse of him standing near the entrance, in a light grey polo shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals. Once she stepped out of her car, she gave herself a quick once-over — a floral off-white blouse, skinny jeans, and burgundy flats for a pop of color. She grabbed her tan satchel and walked toward her date.

"I thought you were going to eat early." He shook his head. "I was, but I got distracted, I guess. By the time I started dinner, you were almost home." As her teeth crunched the pasta, she looked away from her husband, whose self-satisfied grin evaporated. "What's wrong, honey?" She swallowed the shards of marinara-covered noodles. "Nothing." "I mean, what d'you think about dinner?" "It's not bad..." she trailed off as she attempted to pick up another portion of her meal with scraping tines.

Fun fact: My pen name (“Jaye”) came from what an old college friend would sometimes call me (“J”). That real-life friendship was the inspiration behind Ann and Luke, specifically as it was portrayed in my debut novel, Make Me Free.

The Big Bad of my WIP is introduced later, but his firm is represented earlier in the story by innocuous advertisements that proselytize evangelical Christianity in a “gentle” way (think “he gets us”)

Micah is only scary to the Big Bad of the story. She starts out at 0, not even 1, and ends up an 8 (to them).

Big Bad Org starts out at a 2 — only Abby sees how insidious they are. Then we meet Charlie (Big Bad Rep). He starts at 4, and ends up a 7.

Without spoilers, all I’ll say is that Micah and Steve are very different in the end than in the beginning. The question is, will their paths lead them back together, or will their individual journeys land them further apart?

When I was 15-16, ice hockey was my special interest & my celebrity crushes were NHL players.

So, the first story I ever wrote was a self-insert romance about a plus-size Black teenager in a relationship with a Russian hockey player. Hockey romance before it was popular. Lol.
