Hey All! I occasionally do analyses of paintings I like to find out why they work for me, and I thought other people might be interested. Here I looked at the composition of Dean Cornwell's - It's Hard to Explain Murder
We see Dean Cornwell's painting It's Hard to Explain Murder. The man we see is in clear distress, while the woman seems to be halfheartedly consoling him. Something terrible either has happened or is about to happen. Given the title of the work it already has: while it is not made explicit, the cane in the lower right corner is pointing accusingly at the man. We see Dean Cornwell's painting It's Hard to Explain Murder. SETTING THE MOOD The grim narrative is reflected in the depressive mood of the painting. This is achieved through desaturated colours, large dark shapes, and rounded hanging forms which also echo the man’s posture. The main element contrasting this harmony of gloom is the sharp form of the cane spearing him. Finally, the downwards diagonal of the elements and lines create an unstable mood. The same story painted in bright colors and arranged horizontally would feel quite different. We see Dean Cornwell's painting It's Hard to Explain Murder. GUIDING ATTENTION THROUGH FOCAL POINTS Cornwell guides us through the story using two focal points. The main one is centered on the characters. These have a high pictoral weight through the simple fact that characters and faces draw attention. Added to this is that the strongest value contrast in the painting, the white collars against the dark clothes, is also reserved for this area, The second focal point is formed by the table in the lower right corner, which holds the accusatory cane. The contrast of the bright table against the dark background and the contrast of the clutter against the empty floor both lend this spot visual weight. My attention then bounces around between the figures and the table, occasionally following the curve of the sofa, lingering for a bit and then being sent right back to the two figures. KEEPING IT SIMPLE A final observation concerns the readability of the painting as a result of the compression and arrangement of the values. The range we see is very limited with darks, lights, and very few midtones. When you look through your eyelashes, these all blend together into two clear groups. Further simplification is achieved by connecting nearly all the darks into one big shape, making it easier to read, and ensuring no stray focal points are battling for attention with the story being told. It took me a long while before I actually noticed the carpet on the floor

Some character art for Humblewood. A crow assassin wielding daggers, a moonlit sky and the great tree city in the background. A racoon bandit throwing dice in the air in a forest setting. A little... mouse guy? With leaf wings looking very proud of himself. Two undead birds, one wearing armour, in a dark forest. A couple of background paintings for Daggerheart. One is a sprawling city at night with a couple of vagabonds in the corner, the other is a plains environment with a bright sunrise and a big... Creature. And Bedouin looking people who live in tents. Some of the 40+ Magic: the Gathering cards I have painted. I don't remember all of the names, ask me a question if you want a specific description! Some scenes for Dungeons & Dragons. A tiefling in a haunted shop, ghosts reflected in the mirror. A woman fending off werewolves in a burning city. A big... dwarf boss guy firing ice bolts while being attacked by heroes. A mushroom guy being tortured by a... Okay, I don't remember what these guys are called either. But he's having a rough time.
