Ok folks, we know work requirements reduce benefits without increasing work (cc: @chloeneast.bsky.social)

But who loses benefits and what happens if work requirements are reversed?

New evidence from linked SNAP-Medicaid data and a natural experiment in CT tell a concerning story...

Thread below 👇
SNAP work requirements have biggest effect on those least able to work
Most people pushed out of SNAP in Connecticut didn’t find their way back in, even when work requirements were later reversed.

I respond to AEI’s mischaracterization of three of my papers

AND

discuss the clear evidence that work requirements don’t increase work, but do reduce food assistance for households that need it.
New from @chloeneast.bsky.social at Can We Still Govern:
AEI cited her work to make the case for SNAP work requirements. Chloe explains that her and other research show that work requirements reduce SNAP access while doing nothing for employment outcomes.

This is also consistent w other research @jasonbcook.bsky.social and I have done that shows SNAP does NOT cause people to work less.

Paper summarized in this link: equitablegrowth.org/new-evidence...
New evidence suggests that receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program facilitates work in the long run
Research suggests that income support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program leads to higher rates of employment in the long run.

Reminder: work requirements kick people off of SNAP, they do not increase employment.

In my ag policy class, students come to this conclusion rather fast in just one assignment where I ask them to examine the impact of work requirements.

Studies below to reference:🧵
The Ag Committee's part of the Reconciliation Bill raises the SNAP work requirement age for able-bodied adults without dependents from 54 to 64. It also changes the definition of "dependent child" from under 18 years to under 7 years old to determine "Able-bodied adult without dependents."

My coauthor @jasonbcook.bsky.social & I recently showed that making parents of younger children comply with SNAP Work Requirements does nothing but take food away from the neediest families.

These parents don't work any more because they face barriers to work.

SNAP does NOT reduce labor supply for working age recipients, @jasonbcook.bsky.social & I find

Explained by 2 facts
1) most recipients face barriers to work
2) those that work use SNAP as insurance against negative shocks & work more in long-run if receive it
