Happy birthday to Czech antifascist resister and Jaroslav Hašek scholar Julius Fučik, who was famously tortured and murdered by Nazis, only to be slandered thereafter by Cold War liberals, who resented him for being celebrated by comrades as a paragon of proletarian virtue and resilience

Got a cool new (old) short story collection containing what appear to be some unfamiliar tales

Have you read the great satirical novel, "The Good Soldier Schweik" by Czech author Jaroslav Hasek? Written after WWI, Hasek satirizes all the sacred cows, esp church, army, police. The [seemingly] guileless hero is Everyman with a peasant’s eye for survival. I’ve never laughed so hard. I needed it

Thinking of the finest soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army, the Czech anarchist Jaroslav Hašek, who surrendered to the Russians and became a Bolshevik commissar.

Well it is Saturday and it's no longer dry January, so

May I recommend The Good Soldier Švejk on this fine day?

An unfinished novel by Jaroslav Hašek, it is a hilarious account of passive resistance/malicious compliance set in WWI.

Check out The Man Without a Transit Pass by Jaroslav Hasek, just wild absurd short stories. Or any of Hiroko Oyamada's books (I really dug The Factory and Weasels in the Attic)

Last book of the old year (ok, a couple of chapters today). Book list tells me I've read it before, in 1997, but I can remember a general vibe. Our summer trip to Prague inspired me to revisit, and yep, it's damn good. No surprise that it was a huge (WW1) influence on Catch 22.

read The Good Soldier Svejk in highschool by printing out in the entire book off a libcom pdf in 3×3, resulting in extremely small text, but bringing page count down to about 100 pgs, within my yearly printer limit. this is also how i read The Conquest of Bread
sleepytime bear is a false image spread by Urantian bourgeois tea magnates to lull the working class into restfulness and acceptance of their class status. real proletarian winter coziness is exemplified by Comrade Svejk
