Last year I read Fučik’s memoir, Notes from the Gallows, which he wrote secretly while in the captivity of the Gestapo, and I found his final lines inspirational and quite relevant to our own times

Happy birthday to Czech antifascist resister and Jaroslav Hašek scholar Julius Fučik, who was famously tortured and murdered by Nazis, only to be slandered thereafter by Cold War liberals, who resented him for being celebrated by comrades as a paragon of proletarian virtue and resilience
