It is the birthday of the poet, dramatist, and activist who wrote, “Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird, That cannot fly.” The American writer who turned words into jazz and made both more meaningful, Langston Hughes was born on this day in 1901.

His 1921 poem The Negro Speaks of Rivers marked the beginning of both the Harlem Renaissance and Hughes’ writing career. He authored novels and plays, though he is best remembered as a poet and newspaper columnist. Many of his poems were first published in The Crisis, the magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. For nearly 20 years, Hughes wrote a column in the prominent Black newspaper The Chicago Defender. His work in both publications celebrated the resilience of Black people in America. And he put the hopes and aspirations of this community into words that helped spark the U.S. Civil Rights movement. On this day in 1960, four Black students first protested racist segregation by sitting at the Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworth's lunch counter, which refused to serve people of color.

David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair, Jr., and Joseph McNeil were the first four of approximately 70,000 Black people who took part in similar sit-ins across the U.S. southeast. They were demonstrating against institutionalized second-class treatment of anyone with dark skin. The majority of these non-violent actions took place from February to July of 1960, when Woolworths and others desegregated their lunch counters. The iconic black-and-white photo of Ezell Blair Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond sitting at the segregated Woolworth’s lunch counter as college freshmen in 1960. Their polite protest sparked nationwide sit-ins, leading to desegregation across the US. Five months later, they were served at that same counter.

just gonna throw out a quick reminder that in America police kill a yearly average of 3 civilians per day, routinely in situations very similar to these ICE killings, and decades of explicit support for police impunity by US politicians is why ICE feels theyre able to get away with this right now

Interesting (?) that Mike Johnson scheduled the vote(s) on the funding bill that covers ICE for the same day as Jack Smith's public testimony. Causing interruptions in the hearing & forcing Smith to wait & wait while the House deals with amendments & the final bill.
