All of this core to the work we at ACEVO & colleagues at NCVO are doing to establish a new framework for the relationship between government & civil society. What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?
Most people working for charities are on salaries, because despite popular belief ‘doing good for the sense of satisfaction’ doesn’t pay the bills. And those salaries have to be paid from charitable funds.

The government has almost complete control (with only a small number of exceptions) of what is debated in the House of Commons, and when and for how long it is debated.
