I usually can't listen to my voice in a recording, but it was worth it to hear this segment that @askpossibly.bsky.social put together on what the R/V Endeavor has meant to @urigso.bsky.social and oceanography. 🌊
The oldest research vessel in the country was just retired. What does it mean for Rhode Island scientists? - TPR: The Public's Radio
The R/V Endeavor, which spent the last 49 years operating out of URI’s Narragansett Bay Campus, was retired last month. Possibly took a tour of the vessel before it’s decommissioned.

Here's a moving, uplifting story of nature's resilience, but, like usual, the hopeful feeling it gives is tempered by the challenges and uncertainty of the future. So thankful people never gave up on this river.

If a storm like Melissa encourages you to think about your own disaster resilience, here is my best advice:
Your greatest prep strength in a natural disaster is a strong community.
Be where you have people; get people where you have to be.
Care for each other.
Yes, even you; yes, even them.

I'd love an updated deep dive on the topic of replacing the world's nearly 1 billion 2-wheel gas-powered vehicles with electric. One of my favorite @volts.wtf episodes was www.volts.wtf/p/volts-podc.... Where are things at 3 years later?

The entire state of RI is smaller than the Houston Metro area. There were 8 No Kings protests in the state. I know folks that went to 3 different ones and all reported huge turnouts, high energy

🌊 Before narrative gets out of control, the very high atmospheric CO2 growth rate, while alarming, does not mean the ocean carbon sink is "shutting down." The ocean will take up CO2 so long as the atmospheric partial pressure of CO2 continues increasing, though its efficiency will decline.
2024 was an El Niño. So higher growth rate was expected, but not that high.
Main reasons are fires, esp. in the tropics and overall land sink strongly reduced. Ocean sink did not shut down.
More on this mid November with the global carbon budget 2025 release.

Could this type of event happen now? Seeing it as a little kid made me believe that people are good and generous, even the richest and most famous among us. We could really use evidence of that right now.

Not the most egregious nonsense in his rant, but did he really say the drones would swarm the wind farm off Rhode Island and threaten the population of the Pacific Northwest?

The Revolution Wind farm was slated to start sending power to homes and businesses in Rhode Island and Connecticut starting next year.
