Rhode Island science lovers showed up today and it was beautiful. In the howling wind, hundreds marched in support, and about a dozen speakers shared what science means to them. Many speakers told us how it literally saved their lives

In my small Rhode Island town, hundreds came out to voice opposition to the administration. Great turnout for an event organized in about a week for 4pm on a winter work day by a a town member who’d had enough.

It is amazing that some people will pay money for 9.5+ pH water to drink, while others are extremely nervous about raising the pH of ocean water above 9 for a short period and in small region during a research experiment.

🌊 AGU is starting and I can't wait to join up tomorrow after closing out my teaching here in Rhode Island this afternoon. A summer student, Nate Newell, and postdoc Una Miller presented a poster this morning on use of Saildrone to explore the role of the Gulf Stream on winter winds. So proud!

Is it possible that Democrats will have an equal vote for Speaker of the House? Strong possibility of a 3-seat Republican majority. Trump will nominate 3 Rep. Reps to Cabinet, including Gaetz, who already resigned. Could vote for Speaker happen before vacated seats are filled?

🌊 Cool new paper comparing AMOC response to Arctic melting under high emissions scenario (RCP8.5) in a high- versus low-resolution ocean model. (Big caveat: no contribution of Greenland ice sheet melt included.). Headline is that the high-res AMOC is more stable, but it still weakens a lot!

Does being outside of the shaded area mean that 2024 saw the lowest emissions for a given month? So was March 2024 CO2 emissions LOWER than Covid-impacted March in 2020 and 2021? (Trying to find the good news)

Something that made me feel good this week: After listening to @volts.wtf podcast with www.undauntedk12.org, I wrote the members of my town's school committee. Two members already got back to me to say thanks, and one said they are already evaluating geothermal heating for the new school building.

Went for a gorgeous, long walk in the woods on a beautiful evening yesterday and stumbled upon .... a portal-potty storage facility. I am trying hard not to see a metaphor in this

Very interesting that "Enhanced mineral weathering" on croplands, grasslands, and forests is included as Nature Based Solutions but Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement is not included. www.nature.com/articles/s41....

Looks like a really important field trial. But do you think it's enough to show the dissolution of the basalt without confirming the ultimate CDR? This quote somewhat surprised me. Really curious how other scientists and participants in the volunteer markets view these assumptions:

The one I know the best is OAE. This paper from 2019 by @bachlennart.bsky.social is one of my faves: www.frontiersin.org/articles/10....
One nice paragraph screen-shotted, but the whole paper is worth a read and has a great list of references
