Fluorescent hermit #crabs - one of the species we get locally glows under ultraviolet light, like many marine animals. Whether there’s any function to this is mostly unknown still.

NEW RESEARCH: Seamounts are a HUB for sharks!

New research on seamounts off Ascension Island has found that there are 41 TIMES the amount of sharks there than in the open ocean, despite no increase in primary productivity.

So happy to have found this amazing rainbow #seaslug yesterday. They only started to appear in the UK in 2022 and this is the second time I’ve come across them - the colours are unreal.

Can you believe this tiny cushion star is just 1 cm in size? They are among the smallest and most colourful of all starfish and live in the upper shore #rockpools here in #Cornwall. The red spots on the very end of the arms are eyes!

In the 20 years since the term “microplastics” was first coined, a growing body of research has consistently shown how pervasive and problematic the pollutants have become.

A recent #ScienceReview provides an overview and the progress made in understanding #microplastics.

Conger eels are something of a rarity off East Yorkshire, with only a handful of official recordings between the Wash and Middlesbrough (about 200km of coastline). Luck would have it then, when one photo-bombed a BRUV recording over an inshore wreck earlier this year. 🦑🌍 #ukunderwater

Still my favourite strand line discovery to date - a female Phronima sedentaria (‘monster in a barrel’) - Isles of Scilly, October 2023!

An amphipod crustacean, she parasitises salps, devouring them from the inside, forming a vessel to raise her young 👽
