Trying to figure out this whole Epidemiology thing on the West Coast of the US (Olympia, WA). Father of a great kid and and two cats. Lucky to have a tolerant partner.

So went to pick up the child today and this wonderful news greeted me. Second major set of afterschool care disruptions and it is only six weeks into the school year!

Children’s birthday parties take so many logistics that it is remarkable. On the other hand, the pizza run is chill and the pizza worker is super helpful, so there’s that

I really love using the Sounder but I am a bit unclear why it makes sense to cancel regular service because of a baseball game. If the service is that fragile, shouldn’t we expand it?

I will never understand why I rarely react to vaccines and my wife is just floored by them. We got flu and covid at the same clinic so it can’t be formulation issues, can it?

There has been a lot of discussion of somebody else finishing George R R Martin's "A song of Ice and Fire". Some people are very defensive of George, but it is true that it is not great when a piece of media is not finished. But that happens all of the time. Look at the Wheel of Time TV show.

I have to say that the current uncertainty in the NIH’s long term trajectory has been a large hit to morale, both my own and my staff.

“After adjusting for inflation, many academic employees are still being paid less now than they were in 2019-2020 — before the pandemic. Faculty members have taken the biggest hit: Median salaries for staff are now 2.8% less; non-tenure-track faculty, 7.6% less; and tenure-track faculty, 10.2% less”
Professors Say They Need a Raise. They Probably Won’t Get One.
Faculty salaries haven’t moved for over a decade, and draconian cuts to higher ed threaten to make things worse.

A more reasonable conclusion would be that *within arm* changes in outcomes are often similar between treatment and "placebo" arms...which is of course true and why we use control groups in the first place. What a joke.

The child is super excited and up late. On any other night I would anticipate sleeping in tomorrow, with the child having exhausted themselves, but I have a sneaking suspicion of an early wake-up

It looks like my son needs glasses. I am so used to always having and using them that I underestimated the trauma of a seven year old being told he was going to be different than all of this friends.

My son suggested we all try screen time limits and I realized how much of my life is interacting with screens. Not sure I have a good alternative but I was sure surprised by how central they are to life

The post-covid remote work environment has some really good points (I enjoy living in Olympia a lot) but I must admit that the number of Zoom meetings to replace in person interaction is definitely not a major upside.

Finally getting to try out the great Pendragon campaign. Neat story so far but also a completely unique RPG experience (for both good and bad).

At a basketball game with Toryn and Shannon. It is so cool to see how fast kids learn things and how kind everyone is being. It restores some hope in community
