This is seriously disheartening. I know a few people from NCAR, and it was one of the places I’d wanted to take my career post-Mississippi. I’m wondering who will absorb the supercomputing resources and if the US will ever come back from this stupidity of climate denial.
NCAR is quite literally our global mothership.

Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources.

Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.

Unbelievable.

So looking to alternative BlueSky clients to avoid having to come from “elsewhere” to use it, the one a lot of people recommend, @graysky.app, seems to have been abandoned for months now. Bonus: it’s broken on iOS.

Guess I’ll keep coming from outside of the state. Mildly disappointed.

Still don’t like how it’s implemented. Either the law needs to change or Apple needs to implement an anonymous verification system. Assuming what they did for their implementation of a federal ID, it wouldn’t be too hard to do an age-only verification request to that.
Months after Bluesky blocked access to Mississippi users, the social media platform is available in the state once again, but only for adults 18 and up.

But larger social media platforms like Instagram and X still have not implemented state-mandated age-verification systems.

With legal challenges to this law pending, we cannot justify building the expensive required infrastructure.

For now, we have made the difficult decision to block access in Mississippi.

To learn more, read our blog post:
Our Response to Mississippi’s Age Assurance Law - Bluesky
A new Mississippi law requires us to block full access to Bluesky unless all users complete age checks. We have concerns about this law’s implementation.

I'm Back Film is a device that goes inside a 35mm camera and replaces the film, swapping it with a 20MP digital sensor. Is it worth $800 though? Let's set it up, test it with an old SLR, compare it to film, and see it it's worthwhile.

Having grown up in hurricane country (and somewhat still affected by them), the forecasts have been essential to planning… anything. And unless I’m mistaken, there’s no private resource that can provide the same capability to outsource this too in a pinch, not that I’d want this to be privatized.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced it would immediately stop ingesting, processing, and transmitting data essential to most hurricane forecasts.
