Some non-trivial analytics problems are inherently boring, but the number of such problems is really, really low and will decrease with purposeful viewing.

I wonder how many people who claim to "love Lolita", the novel, know the name of the girl.

I finished my vocabulary practice (spaced repetition system) for the first time since I had a stroke (back in April).

It feels like I'm finally getting everything back that I'm going to get back.

Someone remind me of the non-criminal uses of cryptocurrency that can't be fulfilled by other means?

If I haven't answered your sales pitches on LinkedIn and via email and have, in fact, clicked the "unsubscribe" for your messages, you can easily move yourself out of the "No" box.

Call me on the phone. Then you'll be in the "Fuck no" box.

Being able to pause in a video game is an accessibility feature, and all games that can possibly make it work should include it.

Looking at you, Blizzard (Diablo IV) and Capcom (Monster Hunter World).

I love the asymmetry of having a Friday off.

Work time? Down by 20%.
Weekend time? Up by 50%.

I'd be more likely to believe this if she were honest about the number -- I've heard from reliable sources that it was 30 to 50 feral unvaccinated people.

Today's mood about all of these vendor pitches.

Not My Ruckus is a 2023 Distinguished Favorite at NYC Big Book Awards: www.nycbigbookaward.com/2023distingu...

I'm really proud of this book about an autistic epileptic ace nonbinary(?) teen in dire straits, but it's not for the faint of heart.

I do more than data, sometimes. 😆

Some might disagreement, but "action" is not a verb.

At this point, I think of "We can ingest the same data and give you answers that mathematics says aren't reliable, but ML/AI will make them so!" as the "standard vendor pitch".

Vendors really get nervous and deflect when I'm on the calls. Way less certain than in pitches to un-mathy folks.
As a data scientist, it's my job to help people understand the limitations of AI. We get many project proposals every day of people promising outrageous things, and I needed to help my non-technical colleagues understand that it's often vague and absurd.

So I made this diagram to illustrate.

It seems obvious to me that if you're asked a technical screening question in a job application, the right answer is not "I'm not answering this, because I'd just ask someone else to do it."

Am I really that strange to think that management isn't above doing work?

"Data is the new oil", the salespeople tell me in their pitches.

So why is it called data _mining_ and not data _boring_?

Soft skills can be really hard to develop.

Without soft skills, there's a limit to how far hard skills can carry you in your career.

If you spend 3 days automating something and it saves you ten minutes a month, you probably shouldn't have automated that thing.

Asking someone _else_ to automate that thing for you doesn't make it better.

Today is a great data day for me:

A question was raised about a sharp change in (metric), and (not my team) explained why it was happening.

When I joined, the first try at an answer was always "The data are wrong". It's nice to not be there anymore.

I get weird about trope marketing and comp titles and blah blah blah. If you're a marginalized author writing authentic lit for underserved readers...that math doesn't work.

So what's the deal here? We keep replicating old hits with artificial framings and rainbow shellac? Seems yikes.
