"Most of the bones of your head aren't covered by medical insurance." is quite a take.

And now I'm very sad to live in a place where garlic only comes in the wingless variety.

Since alpha = 0.01, not significant.

Executive desk toy for Romans who liked to LARP on the weekends?

Yep, I got that. My PhD work was in knot theory, and most of the English speakers in the field are well aware of the homophone possibilities.

Nowadays, I'm in industry, but I hope there are jokes about how to put S1 into AWS S3 buckets (since classical knots are S1->S3 embeddings).

And some are a vinculum.

In my head, I just HOMFLYPT you off. Knot invariants are fantastic, and the phrase is excellent for punning. (P and T of HOMFLYPT are also fantastic. I had a lovely lunch with them in Korea years ago. This is knot name dropping.)

This answer is so upsetting to so many people that I've switched to "To the best of my knowledge, no."
April 17, 2024 at 10:01 PM
The answer seems evasive to many allistic people, and I think _particularly_ evasive to lawyers, who are trained in rhetoric.

Witness, trying to be accurate, is saying what they can observe (their own memory, but not the past).

Lawyer wants a falsifiable statement, and memory often isn't.

Do you transcribe all hesitation phenomena?

I can see some being semantically important, and others as just being... does it matter whether the person said "um" 6 times or 7 times? (Maybe?)

how many in a bunch?

About $16k for mine also. For the same public university, same degree, it would now be $115k. (Inflation adjusted, mine cost $24k.)

My PhD cost about 700k JPY (about $7k at the time). It still costs about 700k JPY (cheaper in USD due to exchange rate changes).

There's nothing hyperbolic about this statement.

A 0-dimensional CW complex. Excellent.

When I was doing science copy-editing, it was typical to have 1 suggested change for every 4 words for a paper by a non-Anglophone author. For Anglophones, the typical rate was 1 suggested change for every 12 words.

The important part is that it doesn't follow a priori, because that would be ... presumptive.
