Is This Human? 🧵

Hello, I'm Dr Yunge, and work as a forensic scientist in the UK, in large part analysing skeletal remains found in ground and buildings.

This short thread will explain the 'Is this human?' project in a little more detail.

Is This Human?

No. Shallow burial base, with no nearby bones and the location (sheep farm), makes identification easier.

Always assess the context as well as the direct evidence.

Is This Human?

No. From the size and shape, this has been taken from food refuse. Lock up bins.

Findings on grass are more common than you think. Foxes and rats will strip the bone of flesh, then abandon when satiated.

6am, and sleep still haunts me, hiding on the edges of my mind.

Early Bronze Age remains in Somerset reveal a massacre, dehumanization, and possible cannibalism. The site challenges assumptions of prehistoric peace. #HumanEvolution #BronzeAge #Anthropology #HumanOrigins #Archaeology #ForensicAnthropology #Forensics @antiquityj.bsky.social

Quick question for the #bookbloggers on here - I’m planning something pretty special for my physical advance copies of my forthcoming crime thriller.

What’s the most unique advance book package/item you’ve received or would love to get?

RTs for reach greatly appreciated! #books #bookblog

Is This Human?

No. This is almost-certainly bone, but not from a human.

There are clear shapes identifiable on a human skeleton, and without any abrasions or fractures, this bone end looks complete.

Is This Human?

No. Many birch branches have a mottled coating akin to what one might imagine is bone. Added to that, the bark of silver birch is filled with oil, which acts as a preservative.

@murdercoaster.bsky.social Thank you for the follow back. Awfully difficult to know if there will be any interest in this project. CY

Is This Human?

No. Although it is bone, you can see the socket joint is far too circular to be human, and for it to be an eye socket, it would need the surrounding bone to be flatter.

What do you think it is?
