Good news to anyone in Gander that skipped arm day... that freezing drizzle is really gonna make you work for it this morning. #nlwx

And make it the 10th outing of the year. 2 more two double up my membership value. If the #nlwx continues to oblige maybe I can get to 18! Was a bit of a struggle today, going before getting food and ahead of nightshift may be the reason...

I haven't seen a superb owl joke yet today...

Pretty bad when you're considering watching the ceremony on NBC cause CBC keeps showing us commercials over the ceremony after they literally just showed us those commercials between the segments of the show 1 minute ago.

Sadly, a fallen tree well got me, snagged my snowshoe, and I broke my walking stick trying to wrestle myself free. RIP old friend. Bought it in Dinosaur Provincial Park on a west coast trip back in 2009 or so. It's been on many many many adventures with me. Funeral pyre to come this spring...

Excellent #nlwx for a #TeaByTheSea: Boil up edition down on the airport nordic snowshoe trails. Once I got half way down the hill it was pure serene winter silence and beauty. Just hook it straight to my veins!

8. Gorgeous #nlwx for it, though the track was a bit soft in places from the sunshine today.

Does Anyone know anyone is Port Aux Basques? Technically the gauge there reported the highest water level of all the ones we have during this past storm, indicating it would have reached minor flooding heights. Didn't hear anything or see anything. #nlwx

Another episode of #TeaByTheSea: Cobb's Pond edition. Quiet #nlwx this evening, not a breath of wind, really highlights the near constant wail of the skidoos in the distance. Seems like a bit of freezing drizzle is coming down too.

Fun Stupid Winter Stats update: Last year we had about 9 and 1/4 hours of snow shovelling total for the year. This year we're already up to over 18 hours, with about 8 and a half hours for January alone. And the winter's only half way done in theory. #nlwx

Outing number 7 with no end to winter in sight. This will be an excellent year, making up for the last 3 shitty winters. The bluish light above the trees is the moon shining through the cloud deck. The calm before the storm! #nlwx

Bit of a trudge today for #TeaByTheSeaInTheTrees: Gander Lake Trail edition. #nlwx was excellent, although maybe too mild to be sinking down 20 to 30 cm with each step even with snowshoes on. Been a long while since I've had the chance to break trail in deep snow.

Boy, watching The Martian then switching to Armageddon is huge downgrade in science realism, which is funny to say cause there's a lot of liberties taken in The Martian to begin with. Second amusing part is the nice inspirational speech by the US President in this movie...

Well, they kept saying AI was going to be better than us at everything... turns out mostly just better at a burning fuels.
Much of the talk of powering AI data centers with next-gen nuclear & fusion is misdirection.

The sector will be past its hype scaling phase by the time any of those are operating. In the meanwhile, they're largely being powered by new gas plants, which can easily continue operating well past 2050.
i was actually shocked to see the numbers on new research from Global Energy Monitor on new gas projects in the US: nearly 100 gigawatts of power—enough to power tens of millions of homes—are currently in development explicitly to power data centers. At the end of 2023 that number was 4 gigawatts

As a follow up... I have located where the images are thanks to a few emails to the towns in question. Turns out it wasn't in Witless Bay... lol.
Received the two following pictures as storm reports for the big storm surge event on Nov 4th to Nov 6th this past fall. Does anyone know where there chairs are in Placentia? I couldn't locate em on street view and the pic has no other clues. The other pic is supposed to be from Witless Bay?

For the one supposedly in Witless Bay, the only way I could see it is if it's somehow way up in the pond on the north side of the Bay? Any help is appreciated.

May as well get out and brave the coldest #nlwx of the year (so far). Never too cold #TeaByTheSea: Gander Lake edition... Probably. First time I crack out the snow shoes in like 3 or 4 winters, even then it was mostly for grip going back up the hill. Beauty of a day if you dress for it.

Lovely #nlwx for some trail clearing! Well... I mean, it could be better, but what ya gonna do. Got the dozen trees out of the various trails, Thomas Howe snowshoeing is completely unblocked... Until the next storm. Glad I found the really snow coated section, it makes me happy.

The ski year is officially paid off with my sixth outing. Pretty much the opposite conditions as the last time, nearly perfect, though #nlwx is making the wind a bit chilly. Crescent moon is enough to light up the unlit sections of my loop.

Thought this was interesting on our walk around Cobb's this evening. Garden lights in the snow eh, who knew?
January 23, 2026 at 12:31 AM
Was supposed to be a "light trailwork" day. Ended up clearing about a dozen small to mid sized trees and made note of 11 large ones that will need a chainsaw. #nlwx has not been kind to trees this winter, we already cleared about 15 trees from the regular trails this past week. Nice to be out though

maybe flaring back up? #nlwx
Looks like a substorm is happening now. Look at the tall red pillars on the Maine cam. These could probably be seen down to North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, etc.

Well, this new phone's night mode isn't quite as good as the old one, probably need a tripod of some kind. However, northern lights confirmed, taken with an 8 second shutter and iso jacked up way too high. Whadya want, wind was brutal on the hands. #nlwx
