Important strike on Thursday in Berlin by Lieferando (Just Eat) riders. Lieferando's shift to sub-contractors is part of a plan across Germany to slash costs by using small firms that have no problem with illegal labour practices, but there is resistance!

Report on the @etuc-ces.bsky.social 'Platforum' in Nicosia, where platform workers and organisers gathered from across Europe to analyse the situation and prepare for the Platform Work Directive.

A key theme: "Bogus employment" is no solution to bogus-self employment!

My report for the ETUC on how workers can 'negotiate the algorithm' has been published!

Algorithmic management is an increasingly normalised part of industrial relations and impinges on fundamental aspects of working conditions, like pay andperformance evaluation 1/2

Why Unions Find It Hard To Forge Worker Solidarity In Platform Companies
In the platform economy, time is scarce, worker interactions are discouraged, and protests met with punishment. The idea of both union and unity are threatened

Students from India are bearing the entire business and legal risk of the German operations of venture-backed food delivery platforms such as Wolt, Uber Eats, and most recently, Lieferando. One only needs to observe the new "fat bikes" on the streets of Europe and ask, who is paying for them?

International student or migrant low-wage worker? Or both? The written and unwritten rules of international student mobility and skilled worker mobility currently operate to maintain a steady supply of low-wage labour to the global North.
