I finished my first cosplay for Katsucon! I hope I'm a good Pitou!

I wish I could use some of my Neolithic and Mesolithic style arrows. I make really pretty ones, but they are also not LARP safe. Oh well, safety first lol
January 16, 2026 at 10:58 PM
I'll have to post more of my LARP costume when I finally have it fully on. I'm still saddle stitching most of it. Dressing is a dryad is an interesting experience lol

Realistically, a dryad probably doesn't wear anything, so going more elf with my aesthetic

Girls love bows 🥰

Although the arrows that I'm going to be using for my LARP look the same but they have big squishy foam heads, unlike these rhombus armor piercers lol They would do a great job, but they are not Larp safe lol 🤣

Pink and blue eye makeup.
I just tossed this together this morning and it looked really nice. I think I'm going to do it more and maybe play with some more colors

They told me that getting all dolled up each day would wear off in time, but I still enjoy doing it everyday. It's a lot of work, but I would not have it any other way lol
January 11, 2026 at 3:04 PM
I need to start sewing my LARP outfit tonight. I've gotten large parts done, but the leather work needs to be finished. I have less than 20 days until the LARP, and this dryad actually wears clothes 😂

"The worship of Ishtar far predates it, and the site being excavated is of Hellenistic date (ca. 2,200 years old), so the pendant is evidence that the Mesopotamian deity had a wide cultural reach."
Silver Ishtar pendant found in Hellenistic city – The History Blog
A silver pendant decorated with an image and attributes of Assyrian goddess Ishtar has been discovered ancient city of Amos near Turunç, southwestern Turkey. Decorated with repoussé figures and hammered dots, the round medallion has a hanging loop at the top indicating it was worn on a necklace. It is missing a part of the lower left quadrant, but the lion’s fierce roaring face, body, hind legs and tail are all preserved. A female figure  wearing a tall headdress stands on the lion’s back. The star is behind her headdress.

Happy New Year!

At a party with my friends. Not sure how I survived 2025. It started with me on the floor of my shower crying, but I'm doing much better now. I'm hoping 2026 is a year of hope and I hope the midterms change things.

Let's examine the cover art for my latest novel, My Mother's Spear. @afilipek.bsky.social is the artist.

The elements in the picture were very carefully chosen based on the time and setting of the book: 160CE Roman occupied Scotland, at in North of Vallum Antonini (Antonine Wall).

Academics: what's the best bit of knowledge you created this year?

I co-authored a new model of the Irish Neolithic, effectively rewriting social structure and the role of large funerary monuments for the creation of community identities
What historians (and other scholars do) is create knowledge. We should use that phrase more and talk about what it means. I think we don't, and it's part of why AI enthusiasts are confused when we don't readily agree that our work can be replicated/replaced by their products.
