more of this, indeed!!!
I recently went through the most transparent job application process I've ever experienced -- in advance they told you the % that each part of the application process was worth and what you'd be ranked on, and then we got a list of all candidates with scores in each category. More like this please!

I have updated the Academic Workload Tracker for 2025. I strongly encourage all academics to track how long you actually work, and at what tasks. It's a crucial way to counter the deliberate wage-theft of obfuscatory university workload models.

This feels so familiar. I am sure we all have very similar examples 🤪
My university is simultaneously offering training courses on social media use for academics, and on the flip side tailored support for taking a break from social media

Gotta love the notes my 6-year-old leaves in my study 🌞

Apparently he has been mastering the art of bubble writing

Great news for the end of the week.

What a pleasure to have been an examiner for @gaddasalhab.bsky.social, or Dr. Salhab should I say, PhD Thesis on

Promoting Honesty with Child Witnesses.

Lovely discussion and some great research coming out of this project!!!

This popped up while scrolling…

I felt quite emotional I must say for a number of reasons i cannot outline here.

But mostly i think because I have probably invested a lot of energy arguing for slow research and not the “lighting fast”

Nothing like being a parent and having the flu….🤒 🤧

Partner away, one kid healthy, one kid poorly… one second you can’t move, the next second you are in the car doing a school run…

a very fine line between desperation and superhero

I used olive oil to repair the stuck radiator valve. I think this probably counts as a case of:

The number of UK universities now actively making redundancies has risen to 85. That number will be will over 100 by spring. I'm afraid this is happening faster, and will be worse, than even I thought. Solidarity and thoughts with and to all affected. qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

Leaving Linköping with a head buzzing with ideas, a heart warmed by data sessions, giggles and chats.

An antidote to my frustration with academia.

Some inspiration for word-mapping experiments from year 1 phonics. (Most probably not my experiments)

I actually hadn’t realised nonwords were actually used in early years education before I had kids…

A study on what many of us already know: over 75% of internal service work in academia is done by women. The bit that gets me:”The male associate professors in particular made it clear that they actively engaged in evasiveness and did not want to participate if it was not positive for their careers”
Women end up doing the academic housework

Back to reality now, and must say the best thing about holidays is the constant cooking.

We were 10 in our house this year for a week and I probably spent half of that in the kitchen cooking.

Oh the amazing food and the variety because there were many mouths to eat it.

I feel so renewed.
