In the about section below, which cannot be seen in this image, it provides this information: The Canadian Letters and Images Project, created in 2000, is an online digital archive of the Canadian war experience, both home front and battlefront, from any conflict in which Canadians have participated. The focus of the project is on the personal materials of participants, such as letters and photographs, which permit us to experience the war through their eyes and their words. These are very often the stories of ordinary Canadians, largely forgotten and overlooked. Our mission is to digitally preserve and continue to make freely accessible this important part of Canada’s heritage for this generation and future generations. The vision of the project is to continue to expand this repository of Canadian archival materials by collaborating with Canadians to preserve and share the individual and collective stories that have shaped our past Accessibility to the past is key to understanding who we are as a nation. We are committed to free access for everyone to the materials of the project. All collections are of equal importance. Every letter, photograph, or other artifact has an important story to tell. The collections and their contents are not edited or censored. Our role as historians is not to judge the past in light of the present, but to present everything in its entirety at the time of its creation.

The massive list of suspended UCLA grants came out today: 300 NSF and 500 NIH grants. I am miraculously not on the list, but this is devastating. Science will be lost, progress will be frozen, people will lose jobs, and careers in science and medicine are being destroyed. This is not ok.

Canadian here with family living in the US - cannot understand how a country as rich as the US would privatize health. A universal healthcare system is so much better - it is better for businesses and a social strength. Why should a cancer patient worry about affording her care?

Passage from Carl Sagan’s 1995 book, the demon haunted world. The passage states “ not explaining science seems to me perverse. When you’re in love, you want to tell the world. This book is a personal statement, reflecting, my lifelong love affair with science. but there’s another reason: Science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a four boating of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time - when the United States is a service or information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those and authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good, and what’s true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media. The 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially, a kind of celebration of ignorance.
