Taking aim at the figure of Robin Hood to consider what life was really like during the middle ages, what lessons we can learn from an outlaw hero, and how we reinterpret our legends through the centuries.

This account exists in support of Into the Greenwood. A podcast for exploring what we can learn by examining the legends of Robin Hood.

Followers can expect history, folklore, & nerdery. But also politics, it would be a failure to truly engage w/ our subject if we eschewed socio-political content.
As an American living in the UK I have legit needed to set people straight about s'mores!

Can I remotely afford this 90💷 Lego set?
Nope!

Do I want it just for the sake of assembling a mini-figure of Guy of Gisbourne that is accurate to his appearance in the medieval poem?
Yep.

Fans are rightly pointing out that the new Robin Hood TV series is rife with anachronisms.
However, some of the most popular Robin Hood adaptations of all time have PLENTY of anachronisms of their own!

They can be distracting, but they're not what makes or breaks a RH adaptation for me.

Last night was the premier of the MGM+ Robin Hood series w/ Jack Patten as Robin, Lauren McQueen as Marian, & Sean Bean as the Sheriff.

Unsurprisingly, I have a LOT of thoughts & will release an episode of the podcast later this week to share them.

Have you watched it?
What's your take?

This why I'm wary about basically every single bio pic and dramatization of real stories.

It's almost inevitable that someone will be mischaracterized, if not outright villainized, in a production that people will accept as being accurate.

I'm glad that he spoke up and that he won!
This is REALLY good to see. Too many colleagues were utterly misrepresented in this awful film, & in narrative surrounding it

They deserve to have their names cleared.

This is why people need to stop using ChatGPT for answers.

There is no "Gnat the Weaver" in Pyle's book.

But there is Midge the Miller & Wat the Tinker. It's the sort of thing that seems to fit & that's what AI does. It guesses at what fits the pattern.

Stop asking the guess machine for answers.

Did we get everything right in the 80s and 90s?
Absolutely not.

But deciding that Maid Marian needed to be a redhead wreathed in flowers like the Queen of the May wasn't our worst call.
