Tonight is #MischiefNight - night before Halloween (sometimes Bonfire Night) where eggs are thrown, fires are lit and there's general scary criminality and vandalism.
Wasn't part of my childhood (but still happens in the North East). First time I experienced it was as a student in Liverpool

I've seen the first 2 episodes of new 'Gatherings' folk rituals documentary and it's really good. Very authentic, told through the voices of the people involved in these traditions. Excellent examples of British folklore customs.

Hawthorn hedges look amazing in their May blossom (and their autumn berries).
In folklore they’re associated with spring fertility and with faeries. Thomas the Rhymer entered another world via a hawthorn tree

There's one week left for writers in the North of England to send us their stories!

We're looking for folklore-inspired tales to publish in our first anthology.

It's been a real treat to read all the submissions so far, but we'd love to squeeze a few more in 🙏

A brilliant and spooky public information film…
Intense atmosphere
LONELY WATER (1973): Legendary child-frightener, and one of the most influential and effective PIFs ever made. Donald Pleasence's voice helped lower the number of child deaths by drowning and opened the door to the scary, deadly PIFs of the 70s & 80s. A folk horror film condensed into 90 seconds.
