This is a thread that has been a long time coming. Part of me hoped it would never happen. But I can no longer sit by.
It has been brought to my attention that my ex is airing dirty laundry again. The story she is spreading is full of half-truths and has a major hinge that's an outright lie.

I see it now. I don't trust people and yet I was so desperate for someone to care that I exist that I invited someone I shouldn't have trusted right in the front door. It's almost comedic how ironic the whole thing is, if you know what I mean.

And is it any wonder that someone who throughout their life was told their feelings didn't matter, by family members, school officials, basically *everyone*, would be blindly loyal and optimistic about the first person who actually seemed like they cared?

if a child admits to struggling or having difficult feelings, please take them seriously. talk to them about what it means and doesn't mean. talk to them about how YOU feel, too. and please do not hesitate to seek outside help. suffering alone is worse than the stigma of a diagnosis, i promise you

it's really important also to internalize that while you mean "that's normal" to be reassuring, for a child who's suicidally depressed, or clinically anxious, or hallucinating and paranoid, etc. it can instead suggest that everybody feels awful all the time and there's no escape or help

Normalize not only asking kids how they feel but deep diving into what those feelings mean. I would tell my parents I was nervous and they’d say “that’s normal”
