very sad news. Peer Bork was one of the leaders of our field, a wonderful scientist, and he's much too young to be gone. www.embl.org/news/embl-an...

Not sure what's more embarrassing: the gesture itself or the mention of Bolívar and Lafayette.
Machado confirms that she gave Trump her Nobel Peace Prize

..despite the fact that the Nobel commission has issued a statement that this kind f gesture is prohibited.

Europeans go around the world stealing art and religious artefacts to put in their museums. Now, non-Europeans who visit the Louvre have to pay 45% more for the ticket than Europeans. And some say that colonialism is a thing of the past

@isme-microbes.bsky.social offers a great opportunity to publish uncultured microbes via #SeqCode using #genomes as type material. A fantastic step toward embracing the true diversity of microbes! But isolates are also welcome 🧫🔬🦠😁

Final format of my first article is now out! We discovered that degrading palsa permafrost might not lead into higher loading of organic matter into the river system. Also, we discovered that microbial communities were dominated by ultra-small Patescibacteria 🦠
Carbon and microbes in a degrading palsa mire are distinct from a peatland and a wider connected sub-Arctic fluvial system
Abstract. Climate change is altering the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients in the northern peatland and permafrost regions, which provide two

New paper up on bioRxiv! This is my third and hopefully final paper on rarefaction. It's still better than the other available methods.

Rarefaction is better than robust Aitchison PCA and other compositional data analysis methods at controlling for uneven sequencing effort
Amplicon sequencing typically results in a wide distribution in the number of sequences obtained from each sample. How best to account for this variation has been a persistent problem in the microbial...

So let me get this straight: Lukoil was sanctioned when Russia invaded Ukraine, which is a no-no for Europe. But now Chevron, which is 100% involved in the US invasion of Venezuela, is allowed to operate scot-free??

Scientists love to excuse ourselves, a posteriori, saying that eugenics is not science. It was 100% regarded as such a century ago by white europeans. Today, @nature.com published a piece where it featured Nick Bostrom, a known eugenicist. This is happening TODAY. Disgusting.
January 5, 2026 at 11:55 AM
“There’s a good likelihood that by 2050, all scientific research will be done by superintelligent AI rather than human researchers,” Bostrom said in an e-mail.

Do you know what else Bostrom said in an email?
“Blacks are more stupid than whites. I like that sentence and think it is true.”

FFS!!!!
