Four cats in a trenchcoat. Usually thinking about either food or ancestor loss coefficients, as one does.
Let it be known that on this day I have used the word pälskling (päls=fur, älskling=darling) in a translation.

I mean karvakamu (karva=fur, kamu=buddy) isn't amazing either, but it doesn't give me the same icky feeling the Swedish version does.

OH WELL. You're bound to become what you abhor.

Halving everything in a creme brulee recipe except the sugar is probably not the greatest idea, and I didn't have enough cream for the whole recipe (nor 6-8 people to feed it to), but I did have extra eggs, so now I have another lot of yolks-and-sugar to do ??? with. And a whole lot of egg whites.

I just cried myself into a migraine by listening to a book club podcast (about Hamnet*, but still) so that's how my Saturday is going.

*a book I got maybe ⅓ into before I had to "take a break" which has now been going for three years. Every day I'm making the choice not to continue.

A year ago vs a month ago. Goose Foot is going to be a father in ~4 weeks!

I can't get over how gorgeous this cat is. (I feel like I'm critical enough of my cats that I'm allowed to say this.) So happy that we managed to save the leg. So happy he's having kittens, even if they're not *my* kittens.

Time for senior health checks for Vilma & Isla (everything's good except their teeth, which I knew to expect because their teeth have been crap since before they became seniors). Isla had a very slight tenderness reaction halfway through her spine so she's getting an extra x-ray at the dentist 💸

If you want to feel older than dust, may I suggest looking into what the current crop of ice dancers consider "90s vibes"

I also momentarily thought I'd time traveled because I don't keep up with skating news and suddenly there were Shibs, but apparently not.
Figure skating weekend here we go 😍

Sometimes when I'm visiting the cats I'm going to use for breeding, I remember their people aren't RB people and tell them their very good girl is beautiful, and SOMETIMES I say the apple of their eye is "better than I expected"

Unrelatedly, this is Goose Foot's sister, who is, actually, v nice*

Ah, the delicate balance between enough caffeine to make you functional but not so much you (I) get tachycardia.

this is a deeply unsettling fact to have learned at 1am
Additionally, hippos - despite being massive - have almost no fat on them. All of that impressive bulk is muscle.

2% body fat. Compare that to Elephants, which are around 8-10%, or rhinos, which are 10-20%.

The average human is around 20-40%, for reference.

They're *all* muscle.

sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier - I didn’t have time to reply when you first contacted me and since then I’ve been crippled by fears that you hate me because I wasn’t immediately available

I broke my very long none books never finish-streak with Heart the Lover which was very predictable but in a pleasant way for about 2/3, and then I just bawled through the last section.

What struck me most about it was how it just whooshed past the most pivotal points of its narrator's life.

I've been staring at one potential pedigree for about four hrs now, not wanting to accept that the thing making it a bad idea isn't disappearing from before my eyes. This is doubly galling because the thing that originally kept me from pursuing it (inbreeding coefficient) isn't as bad as I thought.

Bea's heat started and, as usual, the cat courtship is 100% normal and does not at all make me doubt the survival of the entire species.

Sorry about the picture quality, I feel like I should just have a standard apology (apologies for: November) in the alt.

Throwback caturday: Vilma's parents 10 years ago, a few days before they moved to their forever home.

I think everyone I know expected me to keep the dad instead of Vilma because of his looks. The mom wouldn't have dealt well with Kasper & Emil though, and they were a super bonded pair.

I don't know what I did right with this group of cats but none of them wake me up to feed them breakfast, even the one (Isla) who makes sure to start bugging me 90min in advance of her other two meals every day.

This post brought to you by someone who woke up at 10:15 on this fine Saturday.

I'm waiting for two girl cats to come into heat, one of whom is going to meet Goose Foot in my cellar and the other of which (Bea) needs to have her boy fetched (by me) from Tampere. The heats SHOULDN'T happen at the same time based on prev heats, but what do you want to bet they will anyway??

Belated happy death moon everyone! I think I last saw the sun about ten days ago (had to scroll back in the group chat to several people exclaiming about how great the weather was then). Some people saw northern lights after that so clearly it's not been 100% overcast 24/7.
Meanings of the word for November in various languages

▪️ Leaf fall (Czech)
▪️ Freezing moon (Ojibwe)
▪️ Dark period month (Inari Sami)
▪️ Wind slender (Navajo)
▪️ Month of goats (ChiShona)
▪️ Month of slaughter (Welsh)
▪️ Time of drumming (Yup'ik)
▪️ Arrival of the scorpion (Thai)
▪️ Death month (Finnish)

For women, the problem is compounded by stupidly small pockets. Women now live in a world where phone manufacturers think we have hands the size of bears, while jeans manufacturers think we have hands the size of pixies. pudding.cool/2018/08/pock...

Past me thought we (I & me, obviously) could get away with normal, non-barista milk in our tea. HOW WRONG I WAS. Past me did not consider that it gets dark at 17:10 (timed it) and we need our treats.

Even paster me did bake extra lemon financiers though so the degradation is not of long standing.

This is maybe the fastest I've adjusted (derogatory) to dst ending. One glorious morning of waking up "early" and by evening I'm already staying up too late. What are you even FOR, extra hour??
