New research out today with colleagues Bishakhdatta Gayen and Andreas Klocker projects that the world’s strongest current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, may slow by 20% by 2050 in a high emissions future. So happy to have this out for the world to read!

Earth’s strongest ocean current could slow down by 20% by 2050 in a high emissions future
Melting Antarctic ice is releasing cold, fresh water into the ocean, which is projected to cause the slowdown

Don’t let anyone tell you this guy is popular or that the country is trending his way. Just isn’t true. Never was.
This chart shows how much of an outlier Trump is historically. Even Biden, who had the next highest disapproval when he took office, still had a plus-20 differential. news.gallup.com/poll/655955/...

*New evidence of active subglacial lakes under the East #Antarctic Ice Sheet!*
We use #ICESat2 to show lakes fill and drain beneath slow-moving ice. Modelling likely meltwater routes suggests lakes discharge meltwater under ice shelves.

Evidence of active subglacial lakes under a slowly moving coastal region of the Antarctic Ice Sheet
Abstract. Active subglacial lakes beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet provide insights into the dynamic subglacial environment, with implications for ice-sheet dynamics and mass balance. Most previously i...

A fast and simplified subglacial hydrological model for the Antarctic Ice Sheet and outlet glaciers
Abstract. We present a novel and computationally efficient subglacial hydrological model that represents in a simplified way both hard- and soft-bed rheologies, as well as an automatic switch between ...

Summer over South Georgia. The glaciers pump millions of tonnes of sediments into the ocean which fuels a huge phytoplankton bloom sustaining one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. But as the glaciers recede and stop eroding, how long will this bounty last?
