Passionate in her beliefs. Fiercely loyal to her friends. Never afraid to let you know exactly where she stood. The best.

Fun Fact: I remember arguing with her over which of us hated Piggy the most. I was sure I did. She disagreed. It remains unresolved...

Can some planetary scientist please teach Avi the most fundamental basics of comets? Like how tails work, and what previous comets look and act like? Because holy moly, this is embarrassing.

Avi Loeb's: "Is the network of jets associated with pockets of ice on the surface of a natural cometary nucleus or are they coming from a set of jet thrusters used for navigation of a spacecraft? We do not know."

Holy crap. This is terrible.

The article states it's "not related to the current U.S. government shutdown". But of course it is: they are both connected by the GOP destroying everything good about this country from the top down and the bottom up.

Astronomy is so weird sometimes. You can't tell how big that object is without some sense of scale… but it's well over SIXTY BILLION KILOMETERS ACROSS.

And that little dot in the gap? *That's a baby planet bigger than Jupiter siphoning up material to grow.*

Today on interstellar comet ☄️ 3I/ATLAS, this time from our team with ESO's VLT: the coma shows rich atomic nickel! This entirely natural metal emission from grains was only recently (last 4 yrs) identified in Solar System comets, was in 2I/Borisov, & now in 3I. 🔭🧪

Just to reiterate for the curious:

While there's *nothing wrong* with thinking about whether some interstellar objects could be alien technology, 3I/ATLAS has had its coma clearly detected since July 3. It's very clearly, *unambiguously*, a comet.

OK, looks like 3I/ATLAS is a comet! If it were an asteroid the image would be symmetric circles. The distortion is likely due to ices sublimating to form a gaseous tail.
