The trade is pending medical review.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 31, 2025 That medical review portion is probably not insignificant given the HBP that caused Suarez so much pain in his right index finger, and likely had him limited to DH’ing only today. The scans came back clean, but I expect the Mariners wanted extra time to evaluate and be super-duper sure he’ll be able to play healthily the rest of the way. Hence the deal getting done today, with lots of time to review and re-negotiate if necessary before tomorrow’s 5pm CT deadline. Suarez, who would’ve been a great fit for the Cubs at third base and a huge boost to their lineup, was expected to command a huge price in trade. Maybe even the most we’ve seen in recent years for a rental bat. The Mariners have an overload of prospects and were in the best position to “over” pay among the suitors. The funny thing, of course, is that the Mariners already had Suarez, trading him to the Diamondbacks a couple years ago. Guess they really, really wanted him back. Good get for them, and at least he’s leaving the NL. Price tag to follow, I imagine.
