physicist, quasiparticle enthusiast, associate prof at University of Twente, eternally missing the Pacific ocean || having said that...
This is such a great thread which I am only discovering now. I’m finishing my own #QuantumMechanics 2 course tomorrow with the Born approximation for scattering and a sweet treat for the students which has become somewhat of a tradition. My favourite class to teach!
First day of classes at @jhuartssciences.bsky.social. A glorious day to learn #QuantumMechanics!

I'm teaching two courses - QM for physics majors, and Philosophy of Cosmology for a general audience. I'm going to try to maintain a thread saying what happens in each class, let's see how I do.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.
Not a shitpost: #NoKings is feel-good performative activism for comfortable mostly upper and upper middle class white folks and that’s good, actually. Millions of people in the streets protesting a fascist regime is good. It is good for the normie baseline to be massive displays of public dissent.

Can’t recommend this enough. This particular series and the podcast including their patreon.

„What’s the origin of the complex exciton emission/absorption profile of 2D halide perovskites?“ I hear you asking. Join my early-bird (8:15 am 🥱) presentation tomorrow at #S25MRS to find out. Also stay for great talks by @aimsduke.bsky.social, Claudio Quarti and others.

The Dutch famously don’t have a protest culture. What made me happy yesterday was to see many of our students join the protests. Several told me it was the first demonstration they had ever seen in Enschede. Hope this inspired many that democracy is more than voting.
The protests against the proposed budget cuts in higher education in The Netherlands keep on going. Yesterday we had our turn at the University of Twente. And look who I found in the crowd: Linn Leppert @hybridlinn.bsky.social representing 💪

I’m in Oxford to visit Marina Filip and talk about projects, but first things first 🤓

Yes, this happened. Chemistry is affected most badly, but also other departments. Most of the PIs that were laid off had active groups, were publishing, receiving grants, teaching, and doing everything else we are told to do to be seen as valuable members of the academic community /1

It was amazing to be involved in this collab. I’ve been dreaming about epitaxial halide perovskites since 2016, and now @mmoralesmasis.bsky.social can make them. Think of all the fun things that can be done with this 🥳
Super proud of this work! Epitaxial growth of halide perovskites at room temperature by PLD: Beautiful reciprocal space maps 🤩, nice strain calculations by @hybridlinn.bsky.social 💫 and co., and optoelectronic characterization together with Czech Acad. Sci., AMOLF and U. of Oxford. #ERCStGCREATE

I can’t even begin to describe what David Lynch’s movies and, yes, Twin Peaks, mean to me. Opened a whole new world when I was in my early twenties. Beloved strangeness.

Academic publishers: it is an absolute no-go to send a review request on 20 December with a deadline of 25 December, followed by an out-of-office message as a response to my email requesting time until 6 January.

Impressions from our festive end-of-the-year group meeting. Yes, bandstructures are excellent for holding Xmas decorations. You just need the right dispersion.

I finally got around to pulling some photos I took in the last year from my camera to my computer. Might upload some of them here. This is one of my favourites. From the northern Californian coast.

Good bye #f24mrs. I’m tired and inspired and pretty dizzy from the flu shot I just got. Had a great time here. Lots of new ideas and questions to think about. Thanks to @aimsduke.bsky.social, @feldmannlab.bsky.social and Paulina Plochocka for a great symposium on chirality and spin ✨

Hey #compchemsky #chemsky folks at #f24mrs: I’m gonna talk about our automized workflow for discovering spin-polarised halide perovskites tomorrow morning (and I’m scared because it’s all new, unpublished and unpolished 🫣).

Biggest takeaway from #f24mrs so far: chiral 2d perovskites are hot. So hot that the assigned room was too small this morning. Perovskites 2015 vibes.

Even as someone who really advocated for data driven approach to ED&I, I stand with a level of cynicism today because it FAILS those who CANNOT be captured and described with the required statistical power.

It’s time to turn the focus on the workplace cultures pushing hard working women out. /5
