What happens when governments turn their backs on culture?

Our first long read of 2026 traces the history of cultural soft power and explores how independent music might navigate the road ahead.
Art in the Age of Intimidation · Feature ⟋ RA
From EXIT Festival to Berlin's fallout over Gaza, political pressure has imperilled state funding for the arts. With the US on the brink, Chloe Lula asks: is this the end of cultural soft power?

Feels like you have to be from a certain generation to understand how startling it is that Noam Chomsky’s reputation has completely crumbled.

He’s a “good hang,” though.
The fact that Post Malone completely abandoned hip hop and hip hop culture as soon as he was able to confirmed everything I ever thought about his merits as an artist, which are almost entirely nonexistent. There's just no art to what he does at all, it's all product. It sucks.
instead of listening to Post Malone you could just revisit this @passionweiss.bsky.social banger: www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/po...

I get tired of saying it, but I’ll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.

But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are a test for every MSM member with a platform. If you are not voicing your outrage at this blatant violation of the First Amendment, you are utterly discredited as a journalist.

A few years ago, this album sparked one of the craziest flame wars I’ve experienced. It was an argument with a well-known critic who violently traded insults with me and claimed that only middlebrow and ignorant fools celebrate Andre’s classic, massively influential performance. It lasted for hours.

Not going to hate…I just hope that all these super-online Socialists/Communists/Radicals who nevertheless take oligarchical money to realize their dream creative and “subversive” projects will extend that nuance to the less privileged of us.

I still think it’s deeply overrated, and I have lingering trauma from all the hype I was forced to swallow when it dropped in 1993. But I admit it has slowly begun to grown on me.

Whataboutism isn’t going to save anyone. It’s true that there are parallels in American history to what’s happening now. That doesn’t negate the fact that there is a moment of consequence happening now.

I hope I live long enough to see a popular cinema that continues the radicalism of the mid-20th century and doesn’t aspire to middlebrow bromides and corporate charity.
