At work, we often anaesthetise, perform surgery on, and tag juvenile fish. We wanted to find out if these procedures impact their oxygen consumption in the following days. Good news, we didn't find cause for concern! 🙂

Assessing metabolic rate and post‐tagging recovery in juvenile fish

I am a serious professional scientist. I am also a commissioner of climate change and have to discuss practical and pragmatic solutions with people who disagree strongly with climate action. I have a calm and optimism-driven approach to climate action.

40 inches of rain is biblically catastrophic.
Hurricane Melissa which is en route to decimate Haiti and Jamaica rapidly intensified to category 4 storm. Rapid intensification is a hallmark of climate change, but that category is only a measure of its wind speed. It is also expected to bring up to 40 inches of rain

Have you ever seen a baby gar eating?

This little Spotted Gar is about a week old and has started feeding on zooplankton (in this case brine shrimp/Artemia/ aka "sea monkeys").

Atlantic killifish are robust little fish, but now @tblanchard.bsky.social & co reveal that fluctuating temperatures while the embryos are developing in the egg can have beneficial and damaging consequences

climate change is causing larger temperature variations BUT we know very little about how variable temperatures impact sensitive, developing fish

in this new study with @tblanchard.bsky.social & @trishschulte.bsky.social we found surprising impacts during development and after hatch!!

Thinking about all of my US colleagues today that work for USGS, USFWS, US Parks Service, NOAA and the EPA. From front line environmental practitioners to scientists and policy makers, these folks ensure that waters are swimmable, fish are edible, that natural areas are accessible, etc, etc, etc.

Might be useful to other folks out there :)

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

I am again improving my respirometry controllers in prep for an experiment 🐟

Today, I learned how to use one arduino to control any number of others!

This is a huge upgrade because now I can control _any number_ of flush pumps while using only 1 USB port on the computer.

Earlier this year, @andyturko.bsky.social taught me how to use a 3D-printer. It's the most useful skill ever for experimental biologists!

Today, I decided to create a printables account to share my models with the world :) Only one simple model there for now, but more to come!
