Good news.

Faculty expressing their concerns seems to be having effects.

If you are in academia, make sure your administration knows your views on the compact.

this should not be controversial 🫠

Powerful words here from Gov Josh Shapiro…..
Shapiro: He rose to some prominence by writing a book about growing up in Appalachia, where there are a whole lot of people who get SNAP. He made millions of dollars off telling their stories, and then he turned his damn back on those very people he likes to write about and claim as his own.

Jonas Salk was born on this day in 1914 in New York City. He is best known for developing the first safe and effective polio vaccine, one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. He famously refused to patent his vaccine or seek any profit from it. /1

Today, we remember the 11 beloved Jewish community members who were murdered at a synagogue in Pittsburgh seven years ago.

May their memories be a blessing and may their families be comforted.

I really appreciate Veena's perspective on this. University bosses who get on board the Trump train now are making short-term decisions to protect themselves, while exposing their students to substantial harm in the short term and themselves to significant legal liability in the future.

Just another normal HHS week: CDC researchers cannot present work at an annual Infectious Disease conference in (checks notes) Atlanta. As a CDC researcher put it:

“It appears to me that HHS’s goal is to prevent the dissemination of scientific information. It’s insane.”

Government shutdown means many CDC experts are skipping a pivotal meeting on infectious disease
An annual conference about infectious diseases is seeing a dramatic attendance decline, in part because Centers for Disease Control and Prevention experts can’t participate.

Pleased to see my alma mater stepping up when it counts.
MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."
