I just turned in the last assignment in the last class of my PhD coursework. What lies ahead of me now is research and dissertation. It's a little scary, but this is why I took the thesis option for my master's degree: I have done research and written a big paper. I can do it again. Only bigger. :)

I'm reading an article that has a puzzling history. It says: "Received: 07-06-2020, Accepted: 03-08-2020, Published online: 02-09-2020" So how was it accepted before it was received? and published online before it was accepted? 2020 was a strange year, but was it really THAT strange? 🤔

Happy Mole Day, to all who celebrate! Rock me, Avogadro!

Avogadro's number (6.022 x 10^23) is staggeringly freaking huge. I thought I'd try to imagine it as air molecules.

We breathe about 843 million (8.43 x 10^8) air molecules in a lifetime. Not nearly enough to make 1 mole.

So...

I got an email yesterday that I've been matched with the committee for my doctoral dissertation. Only three weeks left in my last term of coursework. I'm excited about my topic and looking forward to wrangling it into shape. The feels are 😱 and 🫣 and 💃.

Wow. Mateo Lopez just knocked the anthem out of the... racetrack... at the Formula 1 race at Circuit of the Americas. I didn't know that he is the youngest mariachi ever. That is one of the technically best Star Spangled Banners I've ever heard and young Mr. Lopez is only 10/11 years old. Just wow!

For anyone struggling tonight:

You matter.
You have value.
You are loved.
You do not need to prove your worth or justify your existence to anyone.

If you know someone who’s lonely, sick or struggling… reach out and say “how can I support you?”

Let them know someone cares

It makes a difference

I made a strategic decision to look up Singapore on the map, to be sure I had the right place in my mental geography. This is always dangerous, because I can lose myself for more than an hour when I start map gazing.

In this case, I started moving westward and found...

Watching Cantor in a bunny costume and Rabbi dressed as a sloth for the Yom Kippur kids' service. Bunny hurt Slothy's feelings by always being too fast and making Slothy feel left out. It's freaking adorable.

OMG, you just DON'T KNOW. While EBSCO was down yesterday, it was some of the darkest hours of my WHOLE LIFE! What do you DO with yourself when you can't instantly search for the social determinants of asthma among 11-year-old boys living in the fifth arondissement with single mothers?!?
I just saw a face on My Beloved which I normally associate with honeymoons, romance novels, and media rated as unsuitable before reaching a certain age. But we were in Panera, and fully clothed! What could it be? Why, of course it was the availability of an academic database after an outage! 😀

It's in no way the same as being present for a live concert, I have come to enjoy one particular aspect of watching/listening to classical music concerts through streaming platforms at home: Getting to clap or cheer or laugh at totally inappropriate (for a concert hall) moments.

I'm so fucking tired of the shit that gets dumped on trans and nonbinary folk because people in the gender and sexual majority don't understand and refuse to empathize.

For pete's sake, people: could you please spend 15 minutes to imagine how life might look if you weren't sure of your gender?

... although sometimes this comes at the end of 4 days of sleep dysregulation.

I have pretty good sleep hygiene, but three or four times this year, I've been completely exhausted. Took a sick day, went back to bed for a 3hr nap, took another 4hr nap in the afternoon, and slept 10hr overnight.
A 4 hr nap is great as long as you don't have anything to do for the next 4 days of sleep dysregulation.

To anyone grumpy about all the attention on Swift and Kelce's engagement, please keep it to yourself. The world needs some damn joy right now. The joy of the couple and of all their fans is a beautiful light in a dark time.

As a member of Virginia's disabled community, THANK YOU.
Today, at the start of Disability Pride Month, I’m fighting tooth and nail to protect services—like Medicaid—that millions of Americans with disabilities rely on as the GOP attempts to gut these services in their budget bill. I’m proud to stand with Virginia’s disabled community.

@markwarner.bsky.social Thank you for voting no.

My sister and I grew up in Virginia Beach, and she's dedicated her career to nutrition and health. Her work has helped make SNAP-ED amazing... and if this bill passes, she'll probably lose her job and millions will lose access to healthful food.

Oh my goodness. I just had a conversation in NotebookLM in which Gemini was sassy af. I've been working with it for several days to draft new versions of security policies. There's decisions I have to make, and there's guidance I can give on what I want it to just propose for me. And then...

I hate it when people say “You shouldn’t care what anyone else thinks of you.” It’s just not true. There are some people whose opinion is unimportant to me, but there are others whose regard really matters!

The trick is to know who those people are in your life.

Lastly, if you didn’t already know, this administration is actively harming our trans and non-white service members. From trying to kick trans people out to policy changes specifically designed to embolden discrimination, a lot of people are suffering.
This information is crucial for them too.
