The special session of the Oregon legislature opened today. The goals of the session are property tax relief and unemployment aid. Gov. Meier says he supports a sales tax but is open to other proposals.

An increase in speakeasies since the repeal of the state dry law caused Mayor JC Ten Brook to move to protect Astoria against the return of the saloon at a city council meeting. He charged the speakeasy owners as men without moral character or moral responsibility.

It is the 10-year anniversary of the Malheur Occupation.

In February 2016, after it had ended, DHM & OPB asked Oregonians about it.

- 20% supported the occupation, 71% opposed it
- 65% thought law enforcement did a good job managing it, 28% a poor job

A mudslide at Sullivan Gulch shantytown damaged eight shacks and seriously injured Joe Belich. Belich was found with only his head sticking out of the mud. He was taken to St. Vincents hospital with broken ribs and internal injuries.

Bennett's vote blocks lower streetcar fares and railway's legal authority past midnight. Council erupts: "Don't impugn my honesty!" Company will operate "at sufferance of the city" until new permit. Nine-day limbo. Some worry jitneys could take over.

The final Oregon surveys from DHM Research are in for 2025.

Across all surveys, 35% of Oregonians said the state is headed in the right direction—the same as last year, but up from the 2022 lows (27%).

Dems and Reps are down a bit this year, while NAV/others are up a tick.
